I'm Different

"I'm different" Elizabeth said to me as we were getting ready to leave a friends birthday party at a gymnastic center. "I can't walk right, that's why I'm different' she clarified. Me being totally caught off guard by her candid comment and a bit emotional due to my pregnancy lost my breath. What do you say to your child as your heart is breaking? I know it is not my fault that she was born so early but hearing her say that makes me feel I have failed her in so many ways. She is different she will always be different from her friends and everything will always be a struggle for her and I hate that she doesn't get a break from her life and all the work she does.
So for now we give her all the love, praise and acceptance we can and hope that she continues to have a positive outlook on life and her fierce will to be independent.

all of her struggles make her who she is. i know, as her mom, that would would gladly give an arm to not have her go through what she is going through though. she is a beautiful girl and i don't think anything is going to hold her back!

I'm betting Elizabeth will embrace her 'difference' as she matures.

If not in person, would you consider introducing her to other older females who have motor challenges - online? I can send you the blogs of a couple.

thanks for your comment! we do know about the recall. we had packets that we returned at the beginning of summer. we also run the humidifier in her room. it's a given now that it's winter. :)

My heart is breaking reading this too Angi. Hayden hasn't come up with anything this heart wrenching yet but I'm sure my time will come too. Remember Elizabeth may be "different" but she's absolutely perfect too!!! Hugs and hang in there you are the best Mom for the job of raising and loving her ...
